Ingredients
- 500g (4 cups) bread or all-purpose flour
- 7g instant yeast
- 60g + 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 60g melted butter or oil
- 280–300ml warm water
- 2 tbsp milk powder (optional)
Steps
- 1Bloom yeast with 1 tbsp sugar + ¼ cup warm water (8–10 min, until foamy).
- 2Mix flour, remaining sugar, salt, milk powder in a large bowl.
- 3Add yeast mixture, butter/oil, and warm water — mix into a rough dough.
- 4Knead 12–15 min until smooth and elastic (windowpane test).
- 5First rise: 1–1.5 hrs covered, until doubled
- 6Punch down, shape into a tight log.
- 7Place in greased, lidded loaf tin; second rise 45–60 min until tin is nearly full.
- 8Bake at 180°C (350°F), lid on, 30–35 min; remove lid last 5 min for color.
- 9Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
